Joseph Thornburgh faces charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.The 60-year-old Thornburgh pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on $25,000 bond.The indictment accuses Thornburgh and three other men of convincing people to invest in nearly worthless bonds. The bonds include those issued in the 1850s by GH&H Railroad and items issued in China in the early 1900s.
The four allegedly told investors that hundreds of millions of dollars in interest had accrued on the bonds and that payment was still due.
