SYDNEY couple is facing more than 90 charges each over a string of ATM frauds that netted tens of thousands of dollars. The 22-year-old man and 37-year-old woman were arrested on September 22 outside a bank on Military Road, Mosman, in the city's north, police said today. Police allegedly found them with $4000 in cash, three blank ATM cards and a number of ATM withdrawal slips. A search of their nearby car allegedly uncovered another $18,000 in cash, 40 blank cards, withdrawal slips and disguises. The pair originally faced two charges each over the arrest, but further investigation revealed the couple's fraud was much bigger than first thought.
Police have located a number of bank accounts opened by the couple, with one containing $112,000 that has been frozen by the New South Wales Crime Commission.
Officers also seized 54 blank debit cards containing the details of legitimate banking customers. Police allege the couple accessed the accounts by fraudulently obtaining customer PINs. The pair now face an additional 91 charges each over the massive fraud. They were refused bail in Central Local Court yesterday, and will reappear in the same court on November 27.
