former boyfriend of Australian model Miranda Kerr was charged yesterday in relation to an alleged $7.3 million fraud of the Commonwealth Bank. Adrian Camilleri, 34, of Edgecliff in Sydney, was arrested by detectives from the Sydney Central Fraud Unit early yesterday. He was charged with two counts of using a false instrument to obtain a financial benefit and one count of making a false statement.Police allege that part of the fraudulently obtained money was used to buy a commercial property in Darlinghurst.Police alleged Mr Camilleri had used false documents, including a phantom lease and a valuation for the property which was grossly inflated, to obtain the bank loan. The police investigation was triggered after the loan defaulted in early 2008.It is the second arrest in relation to the loan. Sydney businessman Matthew Rhodin was last month arrested and charged with identical offences.Mr Camilleri's first attempt for bail, where he wanted to put the $100,000 surety on a credit card, was rejected. However, a second attempt late yesterday afternoon was successful and Mr Camilleri walked free on conditional bail.
Since parting company five years ago, Mr Camilleri and Kerr could hardly have pursued more divergent paths in their careers - and lives.Today she is one of the most sought after models in the world. He is an undischarged bankrupt facing serious criminal charges.
