Maria Leon was living in section 8 housing, but still owned a home which she didn't declare on the applications year after year. "In August of 2008 the Tucson Police Department received information from the city of Tucson's housing management division of a possible fraud violation that had been committed by one of our police officers," says Lt. Rick Middleton.That investigation was turned over to the Attorney General's Office, which prosecutes housing fraud cases. Leon was indicted in late October. According to the Attorney General's Office fraud is a class 5 felony and it carries a half year to two and a half year sentence. She was indicted on six countsTucson police tell us they gave her a notice of intent to terminate earlier this month. They say she had the opportunity to fight it and didn't. Leon was terminated on Tuesday. "It is very disappointing for the Tucson Police Department that one of our employees had to be responsible or be subjected to this type of charge," says Lt. Middleton.Leon began her career as a records clerk in the police department in 1995. In 2006, she became an officer. Her career ended Tuesday when she went to the Pima County jail to get photographed and fingerprinted. After 3 to 4 hours in booking she was released. In an effort to be balanced, we contacted Maria Leon and asked her if she wanted to talk about the indictment. She had no comment. Lieutenant Rick Middleton wants to assure the public, the vast majority of officers are hard working, trustworthy individuals work diligently to protect the public.
