HSBC chairman to appear before MPs | Reuters: "Douglas Flint will give evidence before parliament's Treasury Select Committee, along with the head of Co-Operative Financial Services and Nationwide Building Society NAT.UL, the country's biggest mutually owned savings and loans society.

A host of top financiers have appeared before the committee since the start of the year, seeking to defend their industry in the face of ongoing public anger over bankers' pay and a perceived reluctance on their part to lend to small businesses.

Last month, the new boss of Barclays (BARC.L), Bob Diamond, struck a defiant tone as he told the committee that bankers had to stop apologising for their profession.

Britain's banking sector is dominated by the 'Big Four' of Barclays, HSBC, and part-nationalised lenders Lloyds (LLOY.L) and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS.L), which took huge public bailouts after making large losses during the crisis."
